Bible Study
Studying and engaging with scripture is an important facet of faith development. There are many different resources to help us with this, but no one tool will suit everybody. We have compiled a list of bible study guides and resources that we have found useful, according to our own particular approaches to bible study.
For busy people...
...try Word Live for Bible readings in three styles - Classic, Alternative and Lectio Divina.
Available online, as a podcast, or iPod App.
We like it because...
...of the alternative formats, helping people make a short time with God possible via their computer or smartphone, and because music is available as well as words.
For those who want to meet God day by day...
...try Scripture Union Bible Study Notes. There are two offerings - "Daily Bread" and "Encounter with God", available on subscription in printed or electronic form. Each scheme lists a daily reading and then some reflections.
Available as electronic or printed magazines.
We like it because...
...it encourages the reader to meet with God on a daily basis and has some interesting articles.
For those who are new to the Bible...
...try the E100 Challenge. Aimed at people who are not so familiar with the Bible and want to be set an achievable target of 100 essential passages. Each passage can be read in 10 minutes or less.
Available as printed book or electronic copy.
We like it because...
...it's very approachable, and free versions without notes are available.
For those who like specifically targeted notes...
...then the Bible Reading Fellowship provide a number of different notes schemes, including schemes aimed specifically for men, for women, for new Christians, and for mature Christians.
Available in various formats, depending on the scheme, including braille and audio.
We like it because...
...it has something for everyone. Check out their guidance for choosing the right scheme for you.
For those who value form and discipline...
...there is always the Common Worship Lectionary. It provides regular, ordered, daily psalms and NT readings, useable within the context of prayer. It fits with daily prayer, it is laid down in canon and non-negotiable, varied and often not easy!
We like it because...
...we feel connected with a much wider community all using the same readings on the same days. One can often feel carried by others, especially when struggling or missing time for prayer.
And finally...
you can download a full years worth of daily bible readings from the Taize website feed we use on our home page.
